Record of government program to provide assistance during the Depression; consisting chiefly of handwritten minutes, together with monthly statement, Sept.-Oct. 1933, of money spent on delivering direct relief for food, medical services, clothing, and seeds to 655 families (3043 persons) at 58 sites in Aiken, in addition to other Council expenditures; title page lists names of directors and officers, which included both men and women. Includes printed manuscript, July 1933, Bulletin No. 4 of the South Carolina Relief Administration, explaining mission, goals, and scope of the administration and its subordinate agencies: Bureau of Works Projects, Bureau of Accounts, Bureau of Records, Bureau of Investigation and of Direct Relief, and Bureau of Garden Projects to encourage cultivation of food crops, and the relationship of the agency to Federal Emergency Relief Administration, county relief administrations, and other South Carolina assistance agencies; includes samples of blank checks used for dispensing funds.
